Kiddos in Glasses
When I first learned that my eldest son ,who is only four, needed glasses, my heart sank within me. I looked at his gorgeous wee face and his beautiful eyes and started sobbing. I researched farsightedness and strabismus like crazy. I learned a lot about the terms and the meaning of the diopters. I read many blogs of mothers whose children wore glasses. There was plenty of good news: most children outgrow farsightedness, and that early detection of strabismus could result in the complete restoration of normal vision.
Still I was a bit upset and not looking forward to it. The more worrying part for us was how on earth were we to keep those glasses on Josiah who almost broke them at the opticians. Needless to say, we did plenty of praying so that both us and Josiah would accept the glasses.
The day of receiving the glasses came. Sean and I were just simply dreading it as Josiah is quite a fighter. But God's merciful and so very gracious. Josiah put on a fight for the first 10 minutes and then to our complete amazement he kept them on and just went ahead with his usual activities. We were both so shocked and so proud of our little guy. Then we realized that Josiah is liking his glasses because he must be seeing better. And in that lies our complete joy. Our little guy is seeing things better!!! I hadn't realized that he was having visual issues. Had it not been for the very rare strabismus I had been noticing over the last few weeks, we would not have caught the farsightedness.
It took me about 20 minutes to get used to Josiah in his glasses. And he still looked cute, he didn't lose any of his cuteness or handsomeness. He looked more on the smart and the grown up side. It's amazing how quickly we all adapted to these glasses. Josiah has begun to look weird without them, and this in only day 2 !! That's simply a manifestation of the Lord's graciousness and goodness to us.
The lesson I've learned from this new era of my maternal journey:
- Kids still look cute in glasses, if not cuter.
- Glasses are nothing short of a miracle, as they help children see better...
- Children see better in glasses which makes a mother's heart jump up and down with joy.
- Children outgrow farsightedness as their eyes keep growing till the age of 8.
- Strabismus can been treated and early detection is vital. So if you notice a child's eyes aren't aligned properly, follow your instinct, try to record it on video, and see the orthoptist with no delay.
- In encouraging Josiah to keep his glasses on, I'm actually helping restore/fix his vision. What joy that is for a parent!!!

God is indeed, faithful! What a wonderful post. I'm so happy to read about your adventures with Josiah and glasses.
My Mom and Dad had my eyes checked very early too. I was (and still am) far sighted with astigmatism in both eyes, so I have had glasses since I was three years old. My Mom tells of how difficult it was for her to have to put glasses on "her beautiful little girl" and how she struggled with it. On the first Sunday they took me to church with them, the Sunday school teacher put her hands up to her face and exclaimed "oh how wonderful that your little girl has glasses. Isn't God good? Now she can see better and that is such a miracle! You have so much to thank God for!"
My Mom was so blessed by that lady's outlook that she has remembered it all these years and relayed it to me.
May God richly bless you. I'm very happy for you that you were able to get some help and give your son the gift of good vision!
P.S.
I recently had to make my blog completely protected. You were already on my protected list but I didn't realize I didn't have you on my "friends" list, so now you should be able to get into my blog if you are interested.
Blessings!
